Companion Support & Passive Value

Shells Hermit Crab Guide

The Hermit Crab Guide explains how to evaluate companion value in Roblox Shells. Companion systems can support collection, farming comfort, long routes, and passive progress, but they should not be upgraded blindly. The right timing depends on your gear, current route, resource supply, and session style.

Use this page to decide when the Hermit Crab is worth prioritizing, when direct gear upgrades are better, how companion support fits with charms, and how to test whether a companion upgrade actually improves your Shells progression.

What Does the Hermit Crab Do in Shells?

The Hermit Crab is a companion in Roblox Shells that collects shells for you automatically, even while you are offline. This passive income is one of the most powerful early advantages in the game — a well-set-up Hermit Crab can collect dozens of shells during a night of offline time, giving you Shellings to sell the next session without any active farming.

Your Hermit Crab has four upgradeable stats: Luck (affects what quality shells it finds), Speed (how fast it collects), Space (how many shells it can hold), and Weight (max carry weight). All of these are upgraded using Pearls, which you earn through farming and from codes.

Luck

Determines what rarity of shells your Hermit Crab finds while you are offline. Higher Luck means it will find better shells passively.

Speed

How quickly your Hermit Crab collects shells. Higher Speed means more shells collected per hour while offline.

Space

How many shells the Hermit Crab can hold before it is full. Higher Space means longer unattended offline sessions before it stops collecting.

Weight

Maximum carry weight. Higher Weight means the Hermit Crab can hold heavier, more valuable shells without stopping early.

Hermit Crab Setup — The Conch Is #1

The single most important thing you can do for your Hermit Crab early is equip a Conch. The Conch is a Rare-tier shell you find by digging on Bay Island. Once you have one, open the Hermit Crab menu and equip it. The Conch directly boosts all of your Hermit Crab's online bonuses. Always upgrade to the best Conch you find — if you dig a better one, swap it in immediately.

After equipping a Conch, upgrade the Hermit Crab's stats using Pearls. Prioritize Luck and Space first. Luck means the shells it collects are worth more. Space means it can go longer between your check-ins before filling up. Speed and Weight can be upgraded later as you accumulate more Pearls from farming and codes.

1

Find a Conch

Dig on Bay Island until you find a Conch shell (Rare tier). This is your top priority — do not ignore it even if you are focused on tool upgrades.

2

Equip the Conch

Open the Hermit Crab menu and equip the Conch. This immediately boosts the Hermit Crab's bonuses. Better Conch = bigger bonus.

3

Upgrade Stats

Use Pearls to upgrade Luck first, then Space. Speed and Weight are secondary. Pearls come from codes (LOTUSBLOSSOM gives 5,000 Pearls) and farming.

4

Claim Often

Visit your inventory regularly to claim all the shells your Hermit Crab collected. Sell these for bonus Shellings. Do not let them sit unclaimed.

Conch upgrade tip: always carry your current best Conch in your Hermit Crab. When you find a better Conch while digging, open the Hermit Crab menu immediately and swap. Never pass up a Conch upgrade.

Hermit Crab vs. Direct Tool Upgrades — Which First?

In the very early game (Bay Island, first 30 minutes), prioritize tool upgrades over Hermit Crab stat upgrades. The difference between a Rusted Sifter and a Gold Sifter in active farming income is dramatic. However, equipping a Conch to the Hermit Crab should happen as soon as you find one — this is free and takes no resources beyond the Conch itself.

Once you have the Gold Sifter and are on Crescent Shore, Hermit Crab stat upgrades become more worthwhile because your active farming is efficient enough that passive income starts to compound meaningfully. Use Pearls from codes for Hermit Crab upgrades and Shellings for tool upgrades — these do not compete with each other as resources.

Situation Recommended Priority Reason
First 30 minutes (Bay Island) Tool upgrades first, but equip Conch immediately Active farming income is your bottleneck. Conch is free so do it anyway.
Have Gold Sifter, moving to Crescent Shore Hermit Crab Luck + Space upgrades Your active loop is now efficient. Passive income compounds well at this stage.
Mid game (Sea Stack Islands) Both — tools with Shellings, Hermit Crab with Pearls Different resources, different systems. Upgrade both in parallel.
Late game Hermit Crab fully upgraded alongside tool grind Passive shells compound extremely well when your Hermit Crab has high Luck and Space at late-game Conch quality.

Common Hermit Crab Mistakes

The most common mistake is forgetting to equip a Conch. Many players go through the entire early game without ever opening the Hermit Crab menu — the Hermit Crab collects shells regardless, but without a Conch, its bonuses are much lower than they could be. The second mistake is not claiming the Hermit Crab's collected shells. These pile up over time and represent free Shellings that go uncollected.

Another mistake is spending all Pearls on one large upgrade instead of spreading them across Luck and Space. Luck without Space means the Hermit Crab fills up quickly. Space without Luck means it holds lots of low-quality shells. A balanced approach — upgrading both together — gives the most compound value over time.

Hermit Crab FAQ

How does the Hermit Crab collect shells?

The Hermit Crab automatically collects shells while you are in-game and while you are offline. Its stats (Luck, Speed, Space, Weight) determine what quality and how many shells it collects. Claim them from your inventory regularly.

What is the Conch for in Shells?

Equipping a Conch to your Hermit Crab boosts all of its online bonuses. Find a Conch by digging on Bay Island, open the Hermit Crab menu, and equip it. Always upgrade to the best Conch you have found.

What stats should I upgrade first for Hermit Crab?

Luck and Space are the most important early upgrades. Luck improves the quality of shells collected. Space lets the Hermit Crab go longer between your check-ins. Speed and Weight are secondary and can be upgraded once Luck and Space are solid.

Where do I get Pearls to upgrade the Hermit Crab?

Pearls come from codes (LOTUSBLOSSOM gives 5,000 Pearls; UPDATE1HOTFIXESANDBALANCES gives 1,500 Pearls; CHARMSFIXED gives 1,000 Pearls) and from in-game farming. Redeem all active codes first before spending Pearls.
