Roblox Shells Beginner Guide
This Shells beginner guide explains how to start Roblox Shells without wasting your first rewards. You will learn the basic dig-and-sell loop, when to claim codes, how to think about upgrades, what Pearls, Lucky Rolls, Charms, and Money are for, and how to build a simple farming rhythm before moving into advanced progression.
Shells is easy to enter, but new players can still get stuck because the game has several overlapping goals: collecting shells, selling for money, improving gear, checking new locations, using special rewards, and deciding whether to save or spend. The best beginner approach is not to chase every shiny object immediately. Start with a stable loop, make one useful upgrade at a time, and only push deeper once your current route feels too slow.
Quick Start Checklist
Before anything else, do these five things when you first join Shells. They take less than 10 minutes and will save hours of wasted time later.
Go to Settings (gear icon, top right) and redeem all active codes. You need to be Level 10 first. Codes give Pearls, Lucky Rolls, Charms, and Money.
Click on sand to start digging. Crawl around until a shell is found, then click when the spinning bar is inside the white zone. Missing a few times is fine — keep going until the progress bar fills.
When your inventory fills up, sell everything at the Merchant NPC. Shellings (Shells currency) are what you use to buy new tools and upgrades.
At every island you visit, hold E on the teleporter to activate a Waystone. This unlocks fast-travel between islands. Do this before farming — it saves enormous time.
Your Hermit Crab collects shells offline. Find a Conch by digging and equip it from the Hermit Crab menu to boost its bonuses. Check its inventory regularly to claim passive earnings.
Buy the Rusted Sifter (200s), then Steel (1,800s), Bronze (3,500s), Silver (6,500s), Gold Sifter (13,000s) in order. Do not skip ahead — each upgrade noticeably improves your income speed.
How to Play Shells — The Digging Mechanic
Shells is a relaxing open-world Roblox game made by A Shell Game. The core loop is simple: dig shells from sand, sell them to the Merchant for Shellings, and use those Shellings to buy better tools. Better tools mean higher Luck, faster Collection Speed, and more Max Weight — all of which let you earn more Shellings per session.
The digging mechanic works like this: click on a sandy area to start digging. A progress bar appears. You will crawl around the area and then find a shell — when you do, a spinning bar appears on screen. Click when the bar is inside the white zone. It is fine to miss a few clicks. Keep clicking until the full progress bar is complete. Each dig attempt yields one shell (or occasionally nothing).
Click Sand
Click on any sandy beach area to start the digging interaction. You will begin crawling around automatically.
Find a Shell
Crawl until you discover a shell buried in the sand. The discovery is automatic — just keep moving.
Time Your Click
A spinning bar appears. Click when it is inside the white area. Missing a few times is fine — the bar will fill with enough successful hits.
Collect & Sell
The shell goes into your inventory. When your Max Weight limit is reached, head to the Merchant NPC to sell everything and collect your Shellings.
Best First-Hour Plan in Shells
| Time | What to Do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 0–5 min | Reach Level 10 (dig and sell a few times), then redeem all active codes in Settings. | Codes give Lucky Rolls, Pearls, and Charms. Redeem before spending anything so you know your real resource count. |
| 5–15 min | Activate the Bay Island Waystone (hold E on the teleporter). Find a Conch and equip it to your Hermit Crab. | Waystone enables fast travel. The Conch boosts your Hermit Crab's passive earnings immediately. |
| 15–30 min | Dig and sell on Bay Island. Buy the Rusted Sifter (200s), then Steel (1,800s), Bronze (3,500s). | These upgrades are cheap and each one noticeably improves your digging speed and shell rarity. |
| 30–50 min | Continue farming Bay Island. Buy Silver Sifter (6,500s) then Gold Sifter (13,000s). | Gold Sifter is the milestone for moving to Crescent Shore. Do not leave Bay Island before getting it. |
| 50–60 min | Travel to Crescent Shore. Activate the Waystone there. Consider buying the Simple Tideclaw (6,000s) or Coral Tideclaw (18,000s). | Crescent Shore has better shells and the Tideclaw tools are a significant stat jump over sifters. |
Hermit Crab — Passive Income System
Your Hermit Crab is a companion that collects shells automatically, even while you are offline. This passive income makes a big difference, especially in the early game where every Shelling matters. Prioritize setting up your Hermit Crab in the first session and upgrading it over time.
The Hermit Crab has four stats: Luck, Speed, Space, and Weight. Each can be upgraded using Pearls (from codes and farming). The single most important thing to do with your Hermit Crab early is to equip the best Conch you have found. The Conch directly boosts the Hermit Crab's online bonuses. Find a Conch by digging on Bay Island, then open the Hermit Crab menu and equip it.
Remember to claim your Hermit Crab's collected shells regularly by visiting your inventory. The shells pile up and can be sold for a nice passive income boost — especially after long offline sessions.
Dig on Bay Island until you find a Conch (Rare tier shell). Open the Hermit Crab menu and equip it. This boosts all your Hermit Crab's bonuses immediately.
Use Pearls from codes and farming to upgrade Hermit Crab stats. Prioritize Luck and Space for better shell quality and longer offline collection windows.
Your Hermit Crab fills up over time. Visit your inventory to claim all collected shells and sell them. Don't let this passive income sit unclaimed.
Always equip the highest-tier Conch you find. If you find a better Conch while farming, immediately swap it in for better passive bonuses.
What Are Pearls, Lucky Rolls, and Charms?
Shells has several currency and reward types beyond the main Shellings. Understanding what each one does prevents spending mistakes.
The primary currency earned from selling shells at the Merchant. Used to buy tools, Tideclaws, and most in-game purchases. Focus your early game on earning Shellings.
A secondary resource used for Hermit Crab upgrades and other systems. Save them for meaningful upgrades, especially Hermit Crab stat boosts.
Used to reroll the trait on a tool. Do NOT use these on tools you plan to replace (like early sifters). Save them for the Frosted Tideclaw or Energy Tideclaw.
Equippable boosts in your equipment menu. For example, one charm increases the size of found shells by 50%. Use these during active farming sessions, not casually.
Code requirement: you must be Level 10 before you can redeem any codes. If you are new, farm and sell a few times first to reach Level 10, then head to Settings to enter codes. Also join the A Shell Game Roblox group as some codes require it.
Most Common Beginner Mistakes
These are the mistakes that slow down almost every new Shells player. Avoiding them makes your first session significantly more productive.
| Mistake | Why It Hurts | What to Do Instead |
|---|---|---|
| Skipping Waystone activation | Forces you to swim between islands, wasting minutes every trip | Hold E on the island teleporter the moment you arrive anywhere new |
| Rerolling traits on cheap sifters | Wastes Lucky Rolls on tools you will discard in minutes | Save Lucky Rolls for Frosted Tideclaw, Crystal Tideclaw, or Energy Tideclaw |
| Not equipping a Conch to Hermit Crab | Loses passive earnings from the start | Dig until you find a Conch, then immediately equip it from the Hermit Crab menu |
| Trying to get codes before Level 10 | Codes simply will not work | Reach Level 10 first through normal digging, then redeem codes in Settings |
| Going to Caldera Cay without the Sun Shard | Cannot buy the Solar Tideclaw without it | Farm during Eclipse events (every ~3 hours) at Caldera Cay to get the Sun Shard |
| Not claiming Hermit Crab shells | Passive income piles up uncollected | Check inventory regularly and sell everything your Hermit Crab collected |
